Loft body scan: a slow release for sleep

Rain on the loft skylight, a black cat curled up asleep
This quiet note has a companion Emberwave video on YouTube. Press play there, then come back and read slowly.
Watch on YouTubeLie on your back, arms loose at your sides. Let the rain on the skylight set the pace. You are going to visit each part of your body once, notice it, and let it go heavy.
- Feet. Notice your toes, the soles, the heels against the bed. Let them get heavy.
- Legs. Calves, knees, thighs. Imagine them sinking a little deeper into the mattress.
- Hips and belly. Let the belly be soft. Let the breath move it however it likes.
- Chest and back. Feel the bed holding your back. Nothing to hold up.
- Hands and arms. Fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders — loose, warm, heavy.
- Neck and jaw. Unclench the teeth. Let the tongue rest.
- Face. Soften the eyes, the space between the brows, the forehead.
If you are still awake at the end, start again at the feet, slower this time. Many nights, you will not reach the knees.
